Artificial Intelligence in Scholarly Publications

Gladden Members have access on the JRGOS website to Clinical Orthopaedics Related Research (CORR) Journal, a publication of the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. The editor of CORR is Seth S. Leopold, MD, a Gladden Member. Kwadwo Owusu-Akyaw, MD is a Deputy Editor for CORR and is a JRGOS Board Member. Carol Morris, MD is the JRGOS CORR liaison and Gladden Member.

The standards regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications and research have been reviewed by CORR and JOR. AI is a rapidly growing field, especially within healthcare. Applications such as ChatGPT have the capability to assist and generate research manuscripts based on user instructions. Below are excerpts from editorials of the leading orthopaedic and medical journals regarding the use of AI in scholarly publications.

Co-Publication with Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (CORR), The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS), The Bone and Joint Journal (BJJ), and The Journal of Orthopaedic Research (JOR) on their shared standards:

For these reasons and others, our editorial boards have agreed on the following standards concerning AI applications that create text, tables, figures, images, computer code, and/or video:

  1. AI applications cannot be listed as authors.

  2. Whether and how AI applications were used in the research or the reporting of its findings must be described in detail in the Methods section, and should be mentioned again in the Acknowledgments section.

Our editorial boards will closely follow the scientific developments in this area and will adjust editorial policy as frequently as required.

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (CORR) follow-up Editorial on AI in Research:

Under the authorship guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which all of our journals follow, an author must meet a number of important standards, including being willing to be accountable for all aspects of the work, to ensure that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of the work will be suitably investigated and resolved, to be able to identify which coauthors are responsible for specific parts of the work, and to have confidence in the integrity of the contributions of their coauthors. A large language model has no means to comply with such standards, and, for that reason—as well as, we believe, simple common sense—AI-based tools cannot be authors on scientific papers.

Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Editorial on AI in Research:

To address concerns about the use of AI and language models in the writing of manuscripts, JAMA and the JAMA Network journals have updated relevant policies in the journals’ Instructions for Authors. These journals have provided guidance and defined criteria for authorship credit and accountability for many decades, following the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors as well as guidance for transparent reporting of writing or editing assistance. These guidance and criteria have continued to evolve to address changes in the conduct, complexity, and reporting of research and related concerns about authorship responsibility and accountability.
