JRGOS at Orthopaedic Research Society Clinical Scholar Career Development Program

The Gladden Society sends a cohort of residents, fellows, and attending faculty surgeons to participate in the Clinician Scholar Career Development Program (CSCDP) annually.
The 2025 cohort included junior faculty member Rebekah Belayneh, MD and resident members Jerome Murray, MD and Ike Amakiri, MD.

The CSCDP is an intensive, two-day annual training workshop designed for orthopaedic residents, fellows, and junior faculty who aspire to become orthopaedic clinician scholars.
The program focuses on developing skills in clinical research, teaching, and leadership within academic medicine. A Gladden Society Attending—an experienced clinician scholar—leads the Society’s contingent each year, providing mentorship, guidance, and support throughout the program experience.

The value of the CSCDP program to Gladden Society members is well documented by the research of Emmanuel N. Menga, MD, Regis J. O’Keefe, MD, PhD, Paul T. Rubery, MD, and Addisu Mesfin, MD who co-authored Scholarly Success of Orthopaedic Surgeons Participating in the Clinician Scholar Career Development Program .

Dr. Belayneh is an assistant professor in the Division and Foot and Ankle surgery at NYU Langone. She completed her Foot and Ankle Fellowship at HSS, Residency at UPMC, Medical School at Howard University, and college at Princeton University. Dr. Belayneh described the Clinician Scholar Career Development Program (CSCDP), as “a unique experience bringing together early-career orthopaedic surgeons, scientists, and research leaders. Over several days, we dove into the craft of developing impactful research questions, designing studies, and navigating funding opportunities—with incredible mentorship and peer collaboration. It was an inspiring reminder of how mentorship, curiosity, and persistence shape meaningful academic growth!”

Dr. Amakiri is a PGY5 at Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program and will be a spine fellow at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in 2026.Dr. Amakiri described the ORS CSCDP as an “invaluable insight into the process of building a career in academic medicine, including strategies for securing funding, writing successful grants, and navigating the complexities of research development. Engaging with accomplished investigators provided a clear view of how to structure projects, collaborate effectively, and translate scientific inquiry into meaningful research. The program reinforced both the strategic and practical skills needed to advance as a clinician–scientist in orthopaedics. An incredible experience!”

Dr. Murray is a PGY4 at the University of Minnesota who will be applying to Sports Fellowships this year and credits his mentors Wemi Douoguih, MD, Eric Carson, MD, Joel Boyd, MD and Craig Bennett, MD for his success to date. Dr. Murray stated that “the ORS
CSCDP experience was an incredibly enriching experience. The opportunity to learn from leaders in orthopaedic research and connect with peers at different stages of training provided valuable insight into how to approach meaningful clinical questions and build productive collaborations. The discussions throughout the program deepened my understanding of how to translate clinical observations into impactful research. I am confident that this experience will significantly enhance my growth as a clinician and investigator.”
