Medical students without an academic institutional “home” orthopaedic surgery residency program face unique challenges ranging from the absence of early exposure to orthopaedics and the lack of benefits associated with institutional affiliations and connections. This review article examines the barriers faced by medical students without home orthopaedic surgery residency programs.

Early exposure to orthopaedic surgery faculty, residents, and programs not only creates mentorship opportunities but improves performance on sub-internships.
