The Forward Movement: Amplifying Black Voices on Race and Orthopaedics – Embrace This Moment of Allyship

Kwadwo Owusu-Akyaw, MD, is a JRGOS Board Member and Deputy Editor for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (CORR). He specializes in Sports Medicine at Ortho Virginia where he serves as the Co-Chair of Hip Preservation and Hip Arthroscopy. Dr. Owusu-Akyaw also serves as the Company Physician and Medical Director for the Richmond Ballet and Team Physician for the University of Richmond.

Dr. Owusu-Akyaw is the Chair of the 2025 JRGOS Orthopaedic Horizons Symposium: Bridging Entrepreneurship, Equity, and Technology Symposium at the JRGOS Annual Awards Luncheon & Symposiums on March 13, 2025 in San Diego.

Dr. Owusu-Akyaw highlights the crucial role of allyship in advancing diversity in Orthopaedic Surgery. The core principle of allyship is profound empathy, which is rooted in a deliberate effort to understand the experiences of Black Orthopaedic Surgeons in the U.S. Dr. Owusu-Akyaw further emphasizes that a genuine ally is dedicated to thoroughly understanding the barriers that Black individuals face in accessing opportunities in Orthopaedic Surgery at every stage of their careers.

Dr. Owusu-Akyaw encourages emerging allies to become members of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS). The J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society is a multiracial, multicultural, and inclusive membership organization that promotes and supports underrepresented minorities in Orthopaedic Surgery which includes African Americans, Blacks, Hispanics, Latinos, and Women.

Dr. Owusu-Akyaw emphasizes that joining the JRGOS offers allies the chance to engage with and gain insight into the experiences of Black Orthopaedic Surgeons. A deeper understanding will inspire allies to actively challenge the systemic biases and barriers still present in the profession, applying what they’ve learned to their daily practices and decision-making.
