2025 Augustus A. White, III, MD, PhD Founders Award

The J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society announces Charles H. Epps, Jr., MD as the recipient of the

2025 JRGOS Augustus A. White, III, MD, PhD Founders Award.

This prestigious honor is presented to a distinguished member of the

J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery. This award recognizes the recipient’s exceptional contributions to advancing culturally sensitive musculoskeletal care while promoting diversity in Orthopaedics and exemplifying an unswerving commitment to excellence in the field.

Charles H. Epps, Jr., MD, the 2025 JRGOS Augustus A. White, III, MD, PhD Founders Award Recipient

Dr. Epps earned his medical degree from Howard University, where he also completed his internship and orthopaedic residency at Freedman’s Hospital (now Howard University). After residency, he served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps. Upon his honorable discharge, Dr. Epps established a successful private practice and was appointed Chief of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Howard University.

A trailblazer in his field, Dr. Epps made history as the first African American member and President of the American Orthopaedic Association. He is also renowned for his dedication to increasing diversity in orthopaedic surgery, having trained more African American men and women in the field than any other academician in the United States.
