Timothy S. Johnson, MD, a Yale University–trained physician with fellowship training at the Hospital for Special Surgery, brings together academic rigor and extensive clinical experience at the highest levels of sport. For more than two decades, he has served as a team physician in Major League Baseball, including long-standing service with the Baltimore Orioles, and has supported athletes across numerous elite international competitions.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Johnson serves on the faculty of multiple academic institutions, including the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Shenandoah University. In these roles, he actively teaches and mentors medical students and residents, fellows, and allied health professionals, helping to shape the next generation of orthopaedic and sports medicine leaders.

Building on this foundation, Dr. Johnson has led a sustained international orthopaedic surgery educational exchange in the Republic of Cabo Verde in West Africa. This work emphasizes hands-on surgical training, multidisciplinary collaboration, and long-term capacity building. Through partnerships spanning clinical, academic, and athletic organizations, he continues to advance orthopaedic education and surgical expertise in resource-constrained settings.

Dr. Johnson’s brother, David Johnson, MD, is also actively engaged in this exchange, along with Gladden members Susan E. Stephens, MD, and Jon Belding, MD, who have joined the Johnson brothers in Cabo Verde to support education, mentorship, and collaborative care.

Collectively, Dr. Tim Johnson’s work expands training capacity, strengthens local expertise, and improves surgical outcomes in Cabo Verde, creating sustainable impact through education, partnership, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Dr. Johnson’s sustained dedication to orthopaedic surgery reflects the highest ideals of the Gladden Society; service, mentorship, and global collaboration and stands as a powerful example of how partnership and education can create lasting impact for orthopaedic surgeons, trainees, and the communities they serve.
