Wayne A. Johnson, MD, Vice President of the J. Robert Gladden Society, recently served as faculty for The Ohio State University Orthopaedic Department Grand Rounds. Andrew Glassman, MD, Chair of the Department and Gladden Society member, hosted the session.
Dr. Johnson is Chair of the AAOS OrthoPAC, Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at VAMC Oklahoma City, and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health
Sciences Center.

His first talk, “Leadership, Diversity, and Resident Success: A Call to Action,” examined the hidden curriculum shaping orthopaedic residency training. He presented data on resident attrition, racial disparities, and the urgent need for intentional leadership to foster inclusive excellence.
Notably, orthopaedics has the highest attrition rate among surgical specialties, and 30% of residents from underrepresented groups report experiencing hostile training environments. Dr. Johnson underscored the transformative power of mentorship and advocacy in helping struggling residents become fellowship-bound leaders.
His second presentation, “Navigating Your Path: Orthopaedics, Advocacy, and Leadership Beyond the Operating Room,” reframed advocacy as a professional obligation rather than an option. Key takeaways included:
